about

What begins as a seed, a blueprint, sprouts with time into a tree all its own. Branches jutting toward the sky, gathering light, dancing gently in the breeze. Each moment of its lifespan unveiling a new aspect of its innate form. Leaves sprout, and in time, fall to the Earth. Through the seasons, the tree eventually reaches its full height. It cannot be rushed. The tree must bloom of its own accord. This process bears a pace all its own. But the thing—the intrinsic nature of the tree—remains amidst the shifting seasons.

With Tdel’s 60-minute improvisational piece, “Interference Patterns,” this growth process—and its manner of innate unfolding—becomes apparent. Each phase evolves from the previous one, with almost imperceptible changes, reaching delicate crescendos before fading into new and broader sonic vistas. A gentle synth pluck ripples outward into a sea of pads. An arpeggiated sequence gains steam and emerges from the deep, carrying the piece forward. Filters slowly open to reveal the full breadth of the movement. Throbbing synths give way to moments of subtle reprieve. As time goes on, new elements come to the fore. The axis shifts and the sequence gains a new vantage.

Within this constantly developing sequence, a sense of space opens in the listener’s mind. As Tdel explains, “something special happens when the right permutation of fundamental frequencies is repeated in sequence for a sufficient duration of time… like looking at a kaleidoscope of sound.” Over sixty minutes, this kaleidoscope coalesces into something greater than the sum of its seemingly disparate parts. An unlocking occurs where there was constriction. Expansiveness overtakes the myopic vision of things. And we begin to grasp at the implicate wholeness and connectedness of life at the hands of an artist at the top of his game.

From start to finish, “Interference Patterns'' hypnotizes and beguiles. Its steady undulations of tone and texture demonstrate the Atlanta-based artist’s keen ear for depth, spaciousness and carefully crafted harmonic layers. For a Going In debut and his longest project to date, the piece finds Tdel at his sharpest, contributing something that is wholly unique and at the same time a perfect fit in the label’s ever-expanding catalog.
